THE WONDER OF CLICKER TRAINING

Clicker training is a powerful yet gentle positive method to train dogs and other animals. This method enhances the development of a strong bond, love and respect between dog and trainer producing wonderful results. It is amazing how this method spins the dog’s wheels and exercises his mind. You can literally see how the dog is solving problems and working his way in the learning process step by step, at an accelerated rate. It makes a THINKING dog.

Clicker training is based on Pavlovian reaction and conditioning. The method uses positive reinforcement as the primary teaching tool and the clicker serves as a marker for the dog; "Yes! That was right". Precise marking timing is crucial !!! A reward (treat) is given immediately after every click, which soon builds a positive association with the click. The sharp click and clear reward help the dog correct his behavior without the need for punishment or scolding.

VERBAL MARKER TRAINING

A Verbal Marker is a word that marks the dog’s good behavior and is used prior to awarding the dog with reinforcement like a treat, praise or a pat. The word that is commonly used is “YES” but it could be any word that will be consistently used for that purpose. The word “YES” is used to substitute for the clicker when phasing it out. Occasionally dogs express fear or resentment when clicker is used. In these cases a verbal maker should be used instead from the beginning.
It's Not About...

Clicker training, like other positive training methods that use food, toys, and fun to motivate and reward good behavior, does not employ force, fear, or intimidation to gain compliance from the dog. Positive trainers do not use choke collars, nor do they yell at the dog, roll him on his back to dominate him, stand over him threateningly, yank on a leash, use electric shock accessories, or kick him to show who is boss.

These measures may cause the dog to obey from fear and they can make the dog dangerous for visitors, kids, and weaker family members.

Positive training is about partnership and mutual respect in which even young children can participate with supervision.
